Reuters: White House enemy No. 1: Rush Limbaugh

Thu Mar 5, 2009 11:59am EST

By Steve Holland - Analysis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has seen the enemy, and his name is Rush Limbaugh.

President Barack Obama's team is helping lead an effort to cast Limbaugh, a polarizing, conservative talk radio show host, as the Republican Party's new face, using campaign-style attacks against a high profile target.

Democrats are taking advantage of a power void within the Republican Party now that George W. Bush has passed from the scene.

DSCC - Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
"I hope [Obama] fails….  Someone's gotta say it."
Rush Limbaugh, January 16, 2009

Dear Friend,

This isn't just some radio host mouthing off.  Rush Limbaugh is the leading voice of the Republican Party.  Make no mistake.  When Rush says jump, congressional Republicans say how high?

Tell Senate Republicans to reject Rush Limbaugh's disgraceful words. Click here.

From the day he entered office, President Obama has extended his hand to Republicans in a spirit of bipartisanship and asked them to work with him to solve America's problems.  Thus far, they have preferred to kowtow to extremists like Limbaugh rather than accept the good faith outreach of our president.

The times are too serious for this nonsense to continue.

That is why today I am asking you to join me in telling Senate Republicans to go on record and declare their independence from Rush Limbaugh.   Your comments will be sent to Republican leaders.

Click here to join the DSCC in demanding that Senate Republicans reject the disgraceful words of Rush Limbaugh and declare their independence from the divisive politics of the past.

America can't afford this childish posturing anymore.  We are in crisis -- and President Obama needs everyone in Washington -- including Republicans -- to work on constructive solutions to get America moving again.

Senate Republicans can begin working with our president to tackle the defining challenges of our time or they can continue pandering to the narrowing and increasingly irrelevant angry right personified by Rush Limbaugh.

Click here to sign the DSCC's petition -- which will be sent to Republican leaders -- demanding that they reject the disgraceful words of Rush Limbaugh and start working with President Obama on real solutions for the American people.

For years, Republicans have been taking their marching orders from Limbaugh.  In 1994, they named him an honorary member of Congress.  Leading national Republicans have called him, "a great leader," "a great American," and "the number one voice for conservatism in our country."

Lately, Limbaugh has grown so powerful that two leading Republicans have had to ask for Rush's forgiveness after they dared to criticize him.

Rush Limbaugh is free to say whatever he wants.

But when people like Limbaugh start dictating the behavior of Senate Republicans and begin jeopardizing the future of America; it is time for an intervention.

It is time to send a message.

Please join me.

Sincerely,

JB Poersch

ps: I have not framed a time cover since the late mr. s. (Sinatra) in 1998

* *   FDR's Brain(s) Trust

The New Deal witnessed an increased role for intellectuals in government. The Brains Trust, a term coined by James Kieran, a New York Times reporter, refers to the group of academic advisers that FDR gathered to assist him during the 1932 presidential campaign. Initially, the term applied to three Columbia University professors: Raymond Moley, Rexford Guy Tugwell, and Adolph A. Berle, Jr. Within a few months, Basil ("Doc") O'Connor, Samuel I. Rosenman, and Hugh Johnson would join the group. These men would quickly help FDR develop an economic plan whose programs became the backbone of the New Deal: regulation of bank and stock activity, large scale relief and public works programs for people living in both urban and rural areas.

Moley, a professor of government and law who recruited the group, argued that a regressive tax (a flat tax all citizens pay: sales taxes, a flat tax on specific amount of salary, etc.) was the only way to rebuild the economy. Tugwell shaped much of the administration's agricultural policy, believing that the key to easing some of the depression's hardships lay in the ability of the federal government to address the growing imbalance between wages and prices. However, Berle rejected the idea of a planned economy per se, but suggested a "new economic constitutional order," that would include a larger federal role in the balancing of the economy.

In their first one hundred days in office, the Brains Trust helped Roosevelt enact fifteen major laws. One of the most important initiatives was the Banking Act of 1933, which put an end to the banking panic. After the Brains Trust defended its reform recovery program in 1933, it disbanded to make room for other advisers and lawyers capable of legislative draftsmanship.

The Newsweek Cover of Sarah Palin. Well done!

MY TAKE: Too many damned critics in the 24/7/365 media are whiners who simply want high viz! It is a good picture. Yes, a real picture of a 44 year old woman who is simply gorgeous. (The Meacham story was crap, elitist to the core). So shut up, you useless talking heads. Enjoy the view and those great earrings of Alaska.
.
And, Sarah, enjoy the spotlight while it is yours. YOU deserve it!

The female Pit Bull

Action Caption: Headline from London Daily Mail on-line:
Watch out Obama - I'm a pitbull in lipstick, says barnstorming Sarah Palin
By David Gardner Last updated at 10:12 AM on 04th September 2008

Sarah Palin recast herself as John McCain’s ‘pitbull in lipstick’ early today to defy her detractors and crown a rollercoaster week with a barnstorming speech to accept the Republican Party’s vice-presidential nomination.

~~~
After Sarah Palin's speech, I wondered... who wrote it for her? No matter. And I knew I was witnessing personal history, watching a fellow female pit bull. Love her. Hate her. She is HERE. Now. And she has brought John McCain back, like a phoenix, back from 2000. Back from being nowhere man, from the Cult of Obama.
Yes, my favorite quote when Ms. Palin, Gov. of Alaska made her speech at the Republican's convention last night (after Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Guiliani) was the sheer confidence and exuberance of her being a "Hockey Mom"
She said it before her speech, and it went right in to the text of her speech:
http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/09/kristol_on_sarah_palin_hockey.asp
McCain aides whose judgment I trust are impressed by Sarah Palin. One was particularly amused by this exchange: A nervous young McCain staffer took it upon himself to explain to Palin the facts of life in a national campaign, the intense scrutiny she'd be under from the media, the viciousness of the assault that she'd be facing, etc.:
Palin: "Thanks for the warning. By the way, do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?"
McCain aide: "No, Governor."
Palin: "A hockey mom wears lipstick."
Gov. Sarah Palin and I have something in common: you see, I have been called a "pit bull" many times in my career, the past 15 years, oh, my God. Why? I was opinionated -- still am--and tenacious in my career in consulting, with a steel will and tenacity for the needs of my federal clients. And I have had some mighty difficult clients: attorneys who do not want to pay a high enough retainer for me, and dangerous ones: attorneys who curry favor with lobbyists in DC and then go right into jail. (Tom Delay, Neil Volz, Duane Gibson, Terry Martin, Tony Rudy, George W. Bush, Bob Ney, Jack Abramoff --who led the hearings? John McCain!)
Gov. Sarah and I both have blue collar guys, we have long-term marriages to. My guy loves his motorcycles. He is Mr. Blue Collar, who does my books. I love my boy fiercely. Damn. She is me. damn ----OMG, I must be a REPUBLICAN! A rock - ribbed, steak loving, vodka--swilling pearl-wearing republican! I am a Jew Broad from the Northside of Chicago! Who woulda thunk this!
Sarah Palin is making an impression to many women -and surprisingly (to me), to men!. She is a comely pit bull, and that's how the dogs truly are. They are sweet animals, but when they get a hold of your leg, the simply do not let go------they just hold on........and on......and .......don't/won't let go of that leg!
My shade is plum, or deep claret. And I favor Max Factor.
MSNBC and parentis companies love Obama, says McCain camp - well, if Hannity is a McCain hugger, what's so bad about Andrea Mitchell's gushing, hmmm?
Coverage getting a tad fuzzy, eh, folks?fo
McCain protests NBC coverage
By 8/17/08 11:32 PM EST
McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis asked Sunday for a meeting with Steve Capus, the president of NBC News, to protest what the campaign called signs that the network is "abandoning non-partisan coverage of the Presidential race."Davis made the request Sunday in a letter that is part of an aggressive effort by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to counter news coverage he considers critical.In this case, the campaign is objecting to a statement by NBC's Andrea Mitchell on "Meet the Press" questioning whether McCain might have gotten a heads-up on some of the questions that were asked of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who was the first candidate to be interviewed Saturday night by Pastor Rick Warren at a presidential forum on faith. Warren told the audience that McCain was being held in "a cone of silence" so he wouldn't hear the questions, which were similar for both candidates.Warren referred again to "the cone of silence" when McCain came onstage, and the senator joked: "I was trying to hear through the wall."Mitchell reported that some "Obama people" were suggesting "that McCain may not have been in the cone of silence and may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama. He seemed so well prepared."A McCain aide said that is not the case: "Senator McCain was in a motorcade led by the United States Secret Service and held in a green room with no broadcast feed."
Mitchell made the comment in the context of saying McCain did better, and that the Obama camp was defensive. In response to the campaign's letter, she pointed out that journalists get criticism from both sides.
"I wasn't expressing an opinion," Mitchell said. "I was reporting what they were saying."
Here is the text of the letter:
August 17, 2008
Mr. Steve Capus
President, NBC News
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York, NY 10112
Steve:
We are extremely disappointed to see that the level of objectivity at NBC News has fallen so low that reporters are now giving voice to unsubstantiated, partisan claims in order to undercut John McCain. Nowhere was this more evident than with NBC chief correspondent Andrea Mitchell's comments on "Meet the Press" this morning. In analyzing last night's presidential forum at Saddleback Church, Mitchell expressed the Obama campaign spin that John McCain could only have done so well last night because he "may not have been in the cone of silence and may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama."
Here are Andrea Mitchell's comments in full:
Mitchell: "The Obama people must feel that he didn't do quite as well as they might have wanted to in that context, because what they are putting out privately is that McCain may not have been in the cone of silence and may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama. He seemed so well-prepared." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 8/17/08)
Make no mistake: This is a serious charge. Andrea Mitchell is repeating, uncritically, a completely unsubstantiated Obama campaign claim that John McCain somehow cheated in last night's forum at Saddleback Church. Instead of trying to substantiate this blatant falsehood in any way, Andrea Mitchell felt that she needed to repeat it on air to millions of "Meet the Press" viewers with no indication that 1.) There's not one shred of evidence that it's true; 2.) In his official correspondence to both campaigns, Pastor Rick Warren provided both candidates with information regarding the topic areas to be covered, which Barack Obama acknowledged during the forum when asked about Pastor Warren's idea of an emergency plan for orphans and Obama said, "I cheated a little bit. I actually looked at this idea ahead of time, and I think it is a great idea;" 3.) John McCain actually requested that he and Barack Obama do the forum together on stage at the same time, making these kinds of after-the-fact complaints moot.
Indeed, instead of taking a critical journalistic approach to this spin, Andrea Mitchell did what has become a pattern for her of simply repeating Obama campaign talking points.This is irresponsible journalism and sadly, indicative of the level of objectivity we have witnessed at NBC News this election cycle. Instead of examining the Obama campaign's spin for truth before reporting it to more than 3 million NBC News viewers, Andrea Mitchell simply passed along Obama campaign conspiracy theories. The fact is that during Senator Obama's segment at Saddleback last night, Senator McCain was in a motorcade to the event and then held in a green room with no broadcast feed. In the forum, John McCain clearly demonstrated to the American people that he is prepared to be our next President.....
We are concerned that your News Division is following MSNBC's lead in abandoning non-partisan coverage of the Presidential race. We would like to request a meeting with you as soon as possible to discuss our deep concerns about the news standards and level of objectivity at NBC.
Sincerely,
Rick Davis
Campaign Manager
John McCain 2008
Who's afraid of the big bad LIMBAUGH?
OBAMA has the talking points memo now (or the last laugh--err, vote>?):
AND now, in his foxhole disguised as being firmly packed---enscconsed in his smoke - filled studio in suburban boggy Florida, Limbaugh berated 20 Million (count 'em) listeners to do his biddings and take a BITE out of BARRACK OBAMA! and they did. But it was not enough. The battle of the Limbaugh buldge (sic) failed.
ah, RUSH LIMBAUGH, my favorite comic relief, rich suburban commando that you are, you could not get the outragousness of your hypocricy to haveyour people pay for their own God-give right: to make a choice of A TRUE LEADER, both -- all -- whom you despise, el rushbo.
but what a p.r. trick! I love it ALL!
