NYT: Just last week: The hoax that went after Gov. Sarah Palin - and was never vetted - MS-NBC, New Republic, LA Times apologize (as they should!)

[AND THEY CALL ME A WANNABE - SHEESH!]

Dan Mirvish, who with Eitan Gorlin created an elaborate Internet hoax complete with a fake policy institute and a phony adviser to Senator John McCain.

Published: November 12, 2008

It was among the juicier post-election recriminations: Fox News Channel quoted an unnamed McCain campaign figure as saying that Sarah Palin did not know that Africa was a continent.

Who would say such a thing? On Monday the answer popped up on a blog and popped out of the mouth of David Shuster, an MSNBC anchor. “Turns out it was Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, who has come forward today to identify himself as the source of the leaks,” Mr. Shuster said.

Trouble is, Martin Eisenstadt doesn’t exist. His blog does, but it’s a put-on. The think tank where he is a senior fellow — the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy — is just a Web site. The TV clips of him on YouTube are fakes.

And the claim of credit for the Africa anecdote is just the latest ruse by Eisenstadt, who turns out to be a very elaborate hoax that has been going on for months. MSNBC, which quickly corrected the mistake, has plenty of company in being taken in by an Eisenstadt hoax, including The New Republic and The Los Angeles Times.

Now a pair of obscure filmmakers say they created Martin Eisenstadt to help them pitch a TV show based on the character. But under the circumstances, why should anyone believe a word they say?

“That’s a really good question,” one of the two, Eitan Gorlin, said with a laugh.

(For what it’s worth, another reporter for The New York Times is an acquaintance of Mr. Gorlin and vouches for his identity, and Mr. Gorlin is indeed “Mr. Eisenstadt” in those videos. He and his partner in deception, Dan Mirvish, have entries on the Internet Movie Database, imdb.com. But still. ...)

The pranksters behind Eisenstadt acknowledge that he was not, through them, the anonymous source of the Palin leak. He just claimed falsely that he was the leaker--and they say they have no reason to cast doubt on the original story. For its part, Fox News Channel continues to stand behind its story.

Mr. Gorlin and Mr. Mirvish say the blame lies not with them but with shoddiness in the traditional news media and especially the blogosphere.

“With the 24-hour news cycle they rush into anything they can find,” said Mr. Mirvish, 40.

Mr. Gorlin, 39, argued that Eisenstadt was no more of a joke than half the bloggers or political commentators on the Internet or television.

An MSNBC spokesman, Jeremy Gaines, explained the network’s misstep by saying someone in the newsroom received the Palin item in an e-mail message from a colleague and assumed it had been checked out. “It had not been vetted,” he said. “It should not have made air.

But most of Eisenstadt’s victims have been bloggers, a reflection of the sloppy speed at which any tidbit, no matter how specious, can bounce around the Internet. And they fell for the fake material despite ample warnings online about Eisenstadt, including the work of one blogger who spent months chasing the illusion around cyberspace, trying to debunk it.

The hoax began a year ago with short videos of a parking valet character, who Mr. Gorlin and Mr. Mirvish said was the original idea for a TV series.

Soon there were videos showing him driving a car while spouting offensive, opinionated nonsense in praise of Rudolph W. Giuliani. Those videos attracted tens of thousands of Internet hits and a bit of news media attention.

When Mr. Giuliani dropped out of the presidential race, the character morphed into Eisenstadt, a parody of a blowhard cable news commentator.

Mr. Gorlin said they chose the name because “all the neocons in the Bush administration had Jewish last names and Christian first names.”

Eisenstadt became an adviser to Senator John McCain and got a blog, updated occasionally with comments claiming insider knowledge, and other bloggers began quoting and linking to it. It mixed weird-but-true items with false ones that were plausible, if just barely.

The inventors fabricated the Harding Institute, named for one of the most scorned presidents, and made Eisenstadt a senior fellow.

It didn’t hurt that a man named Michael Eisenstadt is a real expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and is quoted in the mainstream media. The real Mr. Eisenstadt said in an interview that he was only dimly aware of the fake one, and that his main concern was that people understood that “I had nothing to do with this.”

Before long Mr. Gorlin and Mr. Mirvish had produced a short documentary on Martin Eisenstadt, supposedly for the BBC, posted in several parts on YouTube.

In June they produced what appeared to be an interview with Eisenstadt on Iraqi television promoting construction of a casino in the Green Zone in Baghdad. Then they sent out a news release in which he apologized. Outraged Iraqi bloggers protested the casino idea.

Among the Americans who took that bait was Jonathan Stein, a reporter for Mother Jones. A few hours later Mr. Stein put up a post on the magazine’s political blog, with the title “Hoax Alert: Bizarre ‘McCain Adviser’ Too Good to Be True,” and explained how he had been fooled.

In July, after the McCain campaign compared Senator Barack Obama to Paris Hilton, the Eisenstadt blog said “the phone was burning off the hook” at McCain headquarters, with angry calls from Ms. Hilton’s grandfather and others. A Los Angeles Times political blog, among others, retold the story, citing Eisenstadt by name and linking to his blog.

Last month Eisenstadt blogged that Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, Joe the Plumber, was closely related to Charles Keating, the disgraced former savings and loan chief. It wasn’t true, but other bloggers ran with it.

Among those taken in by Monday’s confession about the Palin Africa report was The New Republic’s political blog. Later the magazine posted this atop the entry: “Oy — this would appear to be a hoax. Apologies.”

But the truth was out for all to see long before the big-name take-downs. For months sourcewatch.org has identified Martin Eisenstadt as a hoax. When Mr. Stein was the victim, he blogged that “there was enough info on the Web that I should have sussed this thing out.”

And then there is William K. Wolfrum, a blogger who has played Javert to Eisenstadt’s Valjean, tracking the hoaxster across cyberspace and repeatedly debunking his claims. Mr. Gorlin and Mr. Mirvish praised his tenacity, adding that the news media could learn something from him.

“As if there isn’t enough misinformation on this election, it was shocking to see so much time wasted on things that didn’t exist,” Mr. Wolfrum said in an interview.

And how can we know that Mr. Wolfrum is real and not part of the hoax?

Long pause. “Yeah, that’s a tough one.”

Well, so he's my cousin. Just sayin'. He is my distant cousin on my late Mother's side of the family, and he is a first cousin of the infamous Howard Stern (ICK.) He is also the prototype for Josh Lyman (sic) on the "West Wing", I think, and a lot of the character in "Entourage" (Jeremy Piven) is based on Rahm Israel Emanuel's brother Ari. What the (bleep!) do I know? I used to work indirectly (sic) for Jack Abramoff,* so I cross whatever party line I can -- a gal has to earn a buck. Me, pit bulls, "rahmbo". It is in the blood. And it is all good.

The Newsweek Cover of Sarah Palin. Well done!

MY TAKE: Too many damned critics in the 24/7/365 media are whiners who simply want high viz! It is a good picture. Yes, a real picture of a 44 year old woman who is simply gorgeous. (The Meacham story was crap, elitist to the core). So shut up, you useless talking heads. Enjoy the view and those great earrings of Alaska.
.
And, Sarah, enjoy the spotlight while it is yours. YOU deserve it!

Hacker Posed As Palin, Stole E-Mail Password
FBI, Secret Service Launch Investigation
UPDATED: 4:37 pm EDT September 18, 2008

Details are emerging about the hacking of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's e-mail account.

The Web site where the hacking was first revealed has published a chronology of the crime. It said the hacker knew the Alaska governor's birth date and ZIP code and guessed that she had met her husband in high school. With those details, the hacker tricked Yahoo's e-mail service into assigning a new password for Palin's e-mail account.

The FBI and the Secret Service launched a formal investigation into the incident Wednesday. Yahoo has declined to comment on details of the probe, citing Palin's privacy and the sensitivity of such investigations.

The person who's claiming responsibility did not respond to an e-mail inquiry from The Associated Press Thursday. In the account of the hacking that circulated on the Internet, the person said it started as a prank but was cut short in a panic over a possible FBI investigation.
On Wednesday, news broke that a hacker broke into the Yahoo! e-mail account that Palin used for official business as Alaska's governor, revealing as evidence a few inconsequential personal messages she has received since Sen. John McCain selected her as his running mate.

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis issued the following statement concerning reports about Palin's e-mail: "This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The disclosure Wednesday raises new questions about the propriety of the Palin administration's use of nongovernment e-mail accounts to conduct state business. The practice was revealed months ago -- prior to Palin's selection as a vice presidential candidate -- after political critics obtained internal e-mails documenting the practice by some aides.

Gawker.com posted family photos and alleged e-mail exchanges the Alaska governor had with colleagues. Gawker claims the e-mail account has since been shut down, but it will leave the images up on its site for all to see.

On its site Gawker offers up screenshots of the e-mails and says "they were saved before the account went dark, along with the contact list. It's newsworthy and we will not be taking it down!"

One person whose e-mail to Palin apparently was among those disclosed, Amy B. McCorkell, declined to discuss her correspondence. "I do not know anything about it," McCorkell said. "I'm not giving you any comment." Wired.com said McCorkell later confirmed that she did send the e-mail to Palin.

Another of the e-mails apparently revealed Wednesday was an exchange in July with Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell discussing a talk show host who had been critical of Parnell. Parnell declined to discuss the matter.

Palin herself used "gov.sarah" in her e-mail address, and her husband used "fek9wnr" in his address. "Fe" is the representation for iron, and "k9" is an abbreviation for canine. Todd Palin was the winner of the grueling Iron Dog snowmobile race, and "fek9wnr" also is Todd Palin's vehicle license tag in Alaska.

Head Count in Fairfax, VA: 23,000? 15,000? 8,000? Were you there? Do you know? 8,000 is still BIG!

well, sir, the LA Times is trying to nail down the *exact* number who attended last week's rally here in Fairfax, VA (it was more than double of the 4,000 expected...but 23,000? Not that anyone does not care to believe anything but HYPE...

((( e.g., i read it on the internet and 23,000 must be so! )))

McCain-Palin crowd: 23,000, or a third that size

By DON FREDERICK AND ANDREW MALCOLM, TOP OF THE TICKET September 14, 2008

One of the many, many imprecise aspects of daily journalism is estimating a crowd size -- especially when the gathering is large and sprawling. In such cases, reporters learn early not to hazard a guess of their own but to rely on officialdom. But sometimes, in another sign of the vagaries of pinning down a count at an event for which tickets haven't been allotted, the figures from the local authorities vary.

Such was the case Wednesday as John McCain and Sarah Palin wrapped up the road tour that took them to several states since the Republican National Convention ended a week ago.The GOP presidential ticket ventured into the heavily Democratic Virginia suburbs adjacent to Washington, where a boisterous and undeniably large audience greeted the pair. But exactly how large? Most news reports, such as CNN's, went with the police estimate of at least 23,000 (a number eagerly embraced by the McCain camp).The New York Times, though, used in its story the reckoning from fire marshals: 15,000. Meanwhile, Marc Fisher of the Washington Post, a columnist for the local section, wrote that he counted it at 8,000 (though he also noted the 23,000 police estimate).

Regardless, there wasn't much question who the star of the show was.

The Worm has Turned-over. The press backlash on lipstick, pigs and pitbulls

Obama in April, 2008: Today he says "Don't Swift-Boat me!" to the very same media folk?

DRUDGE: AS THE PRESS TURNS: OBAMA SAYS 'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH'

--------------------------------

Phraseology Lesson:

Where does the phrase "the worm has turned" come from? from Maven Phrases:

It's one of many derived forms of an old proverb, the base of which is either tread on a worm and it will turn or even a worm will turn. It means 'even the most humble will strike back if abused enough'.

The proverb is first recorded in John Heywood's 1546 collection of proverbs in the form: "Tread a woorme on the tayle and it must turne agayne." Shakespeare uses it, of course: "The smallest worm will turn, being trodden on" (Henry VI, part III). It has remained common in all sorts of literature: "He's a very meek type. Still, the worm will turn, or so they say." (Agatha Christie, The Mirror Crack'd).

The proverb's first American attestation is in 1703, and there are a number of eighteenth-century American examples, showing that it has been popular for some time.

In the form the worm has turned, the proverb is often used in the broad sense 'the situation has changed', which suggests that people aren't really clear about what it really means: The day was one short, flippary (sic) sound bite or two on how one Sen. Barrack H. Obama could say "fishwrap" and "lipstick on a pig" in two or three sentences and watch the worm turn 360 degrees in favor of Mr. McCain and running mate _____ (you know who!). Oh! And how the worm has turned for Mr. McCain--whose approval ratings now rise above Mr. Obama's s in my state by 10 percentage points! (re-tread on a quote from the venerable nyt)

PR Newswire: Palin-Tol-Ogy - the Newsweek cover story

NEWSWEEK Cover: Palin-Tol-Ogy

From Her Race for Mayor to the 'Troopergate' Controversy: An In-Depth Look at the Governor, Hockey Mom, Hunter, Reformer, Pro-Life, 'Regular Red State Gal' Palin Didn't Always Regard Former Brother-In-Law as Bad Guy; Penned 2000 Reference Letter Calling Him 'A FINE ROLE MODEL'

Last update: 1:02 p.m. EDT Sept. 7, 2008

NEW YORK, Sept 07, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a self-described hockey Mom who hunts moose, juggles BlackBerrys and kids. She is also riven with contradictions and complexities. Palin is a reformer, but faces allegations of exerting improper influence in city and state government. A self-styled regular Red State gal, she is relentlessly driven, a politician of epic ambition who is running against a Washington establishment that, if elected, she will inevitably join, and even rule over.

In the September 15 Newsweek cover package, "Palin-tol-ogy," (on newsstands Monday, September 8), San Francisco Bureau Chief Karen Breslau and Washington Bureau Chief Jeffrey Bartholet plumb Palin's record for a better understanding of how she sees the world and where she stands on issues.

In the wake of her nomination, so many dirt-diggers were clamoring to get into the city hall of Wasilla, Palin's hometown, that the mayor, Dianne Keller, started a number system for out-of-towners to take turns. But the media's need for details about Palin mirrors a national hunger to know more about the 44-year-old governor who has improbably shaken up an already tumultuous race for the White House. The country was introduced to her and her family over the Labor Day weekend and through the Republican National Convention. Now, however, it's time to figure out not only who she is but what she's done and what she believes. Palin's personal story taps one of the great American myths -- the hardy woman of the frontier, God-fearing and determined to succeed against the odds. But as with most political biographies, the rougher edges have been burnished. To her critics, she's also shallow, opportunistic and even corrupt herself.

Palin's sense of personal mission may be rooted in her religious upbringing. She was raised a devout Christian, attending an Assembly of God church from the age of 4 until she was 38, and baptized in the cold waters of Alaska's Little Beaver Lake when she was 12. Formed in such a milieu, it is not surprising that someone like Palin would have a heightened sense of self, and of the possibilities of self, for she was taught from her earliest days that she could be directly moved by God. Friends say the Ten Commandments imbued her with a strong sense of right and wrong. Even now, when she talks about complex political matters, she sometimes speaks in religious terms. To a church gathering, she described a $30 billion natural-gas pipeline project, backed by state tax money, as "God's will." Similarly, she said the war in Iraq was "a task that is from God ... That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for -- that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Palin won her first election as Wasilla mayor with help and financial support from conservative groups. Some of her positions are clear: she's pro-life, opposing abortion in all cases except when the mother's life is in danger. She opposes same-sex marriage and favors teaching creationism alongside evolution in schools. But she hasn't pushed for legislative changes in any of those areas. Her reputation is built largely on standing up to corruption. But she's also regarded by political opponents as vindictive and petty, and has been known to mix personal interests in her own political life, leading to charges of hypocrisy. The issue likely to get the most press in the coming months is "Troopergate." This concerns Palin's former brother-in-law, Mike Wooten, and her alleged attempts to get him kicked off the state police force. Critics say she abused her power. Defenders say she was trying to protect her family against someone who posed a danger.

Palin, however, didn't always regard Wooten as a bad guy. Newsweek has obtained a reference letter she wrote for Wooten in January 2000. She described his good works as a volunteer in local police and youth auxiliary programs: "I have witnessed Mike's gift of calm and kindness toward many young kids here in Wasilla. I have never seen him raise his voice, nor lose patience, nor become aggitated [sic] in the presence of any child." She called him a "fine role model." The following year, he married Palin's sister Molly. But the couple broke up in April 2005 and fought a bitter custody battle. Governor Palin, her husband, Todd, and close aides are now embroiled in what has become a public controversy: they're the subject of an official investigation, ordered by the Alaska State Legislature, into allegations that they may have made improper or possibly illegal efforts to get Wooten disciplined, and even fired. (Palin says she is innocent of any wrongdoing.)

Also in the cover package:

Chief Political Correspondent Howard Fineman writes that although Palin is a tough opponent, the Democrats will need to tread carefully when coming after her. Democrats are determined to attack her credibility, and "the first -- and for Democrats, the most obvious -- way to do so is on abortion. Palin doesn't believe in abortion even in cases of rape or incest," he writes. Still, the real task of hunting Palin belongs to Biden, who "is as deeply informed on the issues as any member of the Senate, but he has a tendency to want to prove it at length." A friend of Biden's told Newsweek, "He has to be careful not to come off as heavy-handed."

Special Correspondent Jacob Weisberg writes that "pragmatic Republicans have been trying to figure out how the party can become a 'big tent,' making room for a pro-choice as well as a pro-life faction. Until recently, the modernizers included John McCain," he writes. "But renewed evangelical dominance of the Republican Party in the George W. Bush years has pushed McCain in just the opposite direction ... It explains how McCain ended up with a wildly underqualified running mate in Sarah Palin, instead of his preferred pro-choice veep picks, Joe Lieberman and Tom Ridge."

Assistant Managing Editor Kathy Deveny writes an essay on why she likes Sarah Palin. "If I'm really honest with myself, I'm mostly just happy that there's another woman on the national political stage. I think it's good for my 8-year-old daughter, who has called Hillary Clinton her idol. She doesn't love Hillary because of her health-care policy or pro-choice stance: she loves Hillary because she thinks girls rule. The more powerful women there are on the national stage, the better it is for all women, because this is a game of numbers," she writes. (Read the cover package at http://www.newsweek.com/ )

While Obama sends out the "Hillary contingent" to temper "the Palin effect", I ponder about NYT OP-ED "The Mirrored Ceiling" and ask, "why bother?"

(((((Read this Warner broad, and then cry, girls, cry your eyes out:

I'll start from the center:)))))

http://warner.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/04/the-mirrored-ceiling/?em

"But in the past, it was possible to fill that need through empathetic connection. Few Depression-era voters could “relate” to Franklin Roosevelt’s patrician background, notes historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. “It was his ability to connect to them that made them feel they could connect to him,” she told me in a phone interview.

"The age of television, Goodwin believes, has made the demand for connection more immediate and intense. But never before George W. Bush did it quite reach the beer-drinking level of familiarity. “Now it’s all about being able to see your life story in the candidate, rather than the candidate, with empathy, being able to relate to you.”

"There’s a fine line between likability and demagoguery. Both thrive upon manipulation and least-common-denominator politics. These days, I fear, this need for direct mirroringand thus this susceptibility to all sorts of low-level tripe — is particularly acute among women, who are perhaps reaching historic lows in their comfort levels with themselves and their choices.
"Just look at how quickly the reaction to Palin devolved into what The Times this week called the “Mommy Wars: Special Campaign Edition.” Much of the talk about Palin (like the emoting about Hillary Clinton before her) ultimately came down to this: is she like me or not like me? If she’s not like me, can I like her? And what kind of child care does she have?

“This election is not about issues,” Rick Davis, John McCain’s campaign manager said this week. “This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates.” That’s a scary thought. For the takeaway is so often base, a reflection more of people’s fears and insecurities than of our hopes and dreams.

"We’re not likely to get a worthy female president anytime soon. "

News Flash! Joe Lieberman, national security experts briefing Palin on foreign policy

Lieberman briefing Palin on policy

12:00 AM CDT on Friday, September 5, 2008

The Washington Post

Joe Lieberman is among several national security experts helping brief Sarah Palin on foreign policy issues as she prepares to hit the campaign trail while cramming for a debate with her Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, in less than a month, McCain campaign officials said. Campaign officials called Ms. Palin a quick study who has sound judgment. But privately, some in the GOP foreign-policy establishment voiced concern that Mr. McCain has turned to a relative neophyte on national security.

Oprah Winfrey wants Obama. Case closed.

Watch out. Hell hath no fury like a moose herd scorned -- with lipstick!

From NEWSDAY: Five reasons Gov. Sarah Palin should appear on Oprah:

Well, I suppose the big flap of the moment has to do with Oprah and Drudge; she claims some report he filed today is bogus, and even went so far as to issue a denial; it's no big deal, really, though DRUDGE (as usual) is pumping this for all it's worth. The post claim: that Oprah's staff is divided on whether she should have Sarah Palin as a guest, with Oprah insisting that she shouldn't come on.

O went so far as to issue a denial, and she does that very very rarely - in fact, I can't even remember an instance when she has.

"The item in today's Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

Now, let me just give you the benefit of my expertise on Oprah: There's no such thing as a "divided" staff out there in Chicago. She is the Queen. They are her subjects. There are no disputes with the Queen, and that is that.

But Oprah's also in the bag for Obama and has made no secret of that either; said she, for example of his recent speech, "What I saw with Barack Obama was something that was transcendent and I felt transformational for me as a human being and for this country. And I only pray in the deepest part of my being that America will rise to this moment. And I feel that what he was able to offer us as individual citizens and as a united country was something that we have never seen before. I really, I think it's the most powerful thing I've ever experienced."
Fine, now, here are five reasons why O should have Palin on:

1.) To talk about motherhood, her family and Bristol; if you're really hung up on politics, O, then this doesn't have to be a "political" debriefing at all, per se, but a larger look at even more important issues, which your show claims to care about.

2.) It'd get a huge number. Hell yeah! Perhaps one of the biggest numbers in "O" history. This is a mercenary business, O, in case you've forgotten.

3.) It'd get the show back to that sweet spot of "relevance" and "news-worthiness." Wonderful to have all 150-or-so Olympians on Monday's season premiere, but the Olympics are old news; Palin is fresh news.

4.) Of course, it's O's right to support Obama in whatever forum she chooses, but she's simply too transcendent - her word - a cultural figure to pretend she's lil' ol' objective and non-political Oprah on her show, and yet Obama's most important supporter in the WORLD when she's not on screen. That's a silly artifice, transparent to all. Why not get Palin on and say, "OK, lady, I happen to think this guy walks on water. Now you tell me why he doesn't, and let's go at this." That would be great TV, and far better than a dreary debate between Palin and Joe Biden.

5.) O helped secure at least a million addition votes for Obama but probably lost hundreds of thousands of McCain supporter-viewers - if not more - to her show in the process. Here's her chance to say to everyone, "I have a right to support whomever I choose, and now to prove to you just how open-minded I am, here's the gun-toting mama from Alaska on the show."

Justice Dept Seeks Reduced Abramoff Sentence

Since his conviction on fraud and conspiracy charges, former lobbyist Jack Abramoff has spent more than 3,000 hours helping more than 100 law enforcement agents in an ongoing federal corruption probe that has implicated "scores of other persons not yet charged," attorneys said in court filings today.

The Post's James V. Grimaldi reports that the extent of Abramoff's cooperation was described in documents from both prosecutors and defense lawyers. They are seeking leniency from the judges who heard the two cases that landed the Republican influence broker in federal prison in Cumberland, Md.

If a federal judge in Washington accepts the recommendation from the Justice Department, Abramoff would serve no more than another three years and three months in prison, not accounting for credit for good behavior awarded by the Bureau of Prisons. Abramoff's attorneys are seeking even more leniency that could have him released from prison by 2010.

In November 2006, Abramoff began serving a sentence of five years and 10 months for
fraud in his purchase of a Florida casino cruise line. Attorneys for both sides are seeking a reduction to three years and nine months.

Abramoff's sentencing in a parallel case of tax evasion, fraud and conspiracy to ply public officials with gifts in exchange for official actions had been delayed until he had mostly completed his cooperation with authorities. The sentencing is set for Sept. 4 before U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle.

In the
public corruption case, the Justice Department is asking Huvelle to sentence Abramoff to five years and four months rather than the maximum 11 years and three months he'd be eligible to receive. The sentences in the two cases would be served at the same time. The government also is seeking about $23 million in restitution.

Abramoff attorneys Abbe D. Lowell of Washington and Neal R.Sonnett of Miami noted in a memorandum that in addition to the meeting with FBI and other agents, Abramoff had reviewed more than a half-million documents.

They also noted that the ex-powerhouse lobbyist had helped convict more than a dozen people, in addition to admitting guilt himself, and his case had prompted reforms that the attorneys said were widely known as "Abramoff Ethics Rules." Among those who have pleaded guilty were former Rep. Robert Ney (R-Ohio), who this month was released after he completed his prison sentence, and J. Steven Griles, the No. 2 official in the Interior Department.

The court papers indicate an extensive ongoing investigation by referencing a document that is sealed because it contains grand jury information. Still under investigation are former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) and retiring Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.), among others.

One new scheme revealed in the papers is that Abramoff and his team of K Street lobbyists padded their billing records -- not to cheat clients, most of whom had hired them on retainer, but to bilk additional bonuses out of their firm, Greenberg Traurig LLP, because "padded hours possibly resulted in higher bonuses," according to a government brief signed by William Welch, head of the public integrity section, and prosecutor Mary Butler.

Abramoff's attorneys also referred to a statement by Noel Hillman, former public integrity chief at Justice and now is a federal judge in New Jersey, who has said that Mr. Abramoff's decision to plead guilty and cooperate and expose the wrongs he and others did was a 'watershed' event in addressing public corruption."

The female Pit Bull

Action Caption: Headline from London Daily Mail on-line:
Watch out Obama - I'm a pitbull in lipstick, says barnstorming Sarah Palin
By David Gardner Last updated at 10:12 AM on 04th September 2008

Sarah Palin recast herself as John McCain’s ‘pitbull in lipstick’ early today to defy her detractors and crown a rollercoaster week with a barnstorming speech to accept the Republican Party’s vice-presidential nomination.

~~~
After Sarah Palin's speech, I wondered... who wrote it for her? No matter. And I knew I was witnessing personal history, watching a fellow female pit bull. Love her. Hate her. She is HERE. Now. And she has brought John McCain back, like a phoenix, back from 2000. Back from being nowhere man, from the Cult of Obama.
Yes, my favorite quote when Ms. Palin, Gov. of Alaska made her speech at the Republican's convention last night (after Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Guiliani) was the sheer confidence and exuberance of her being a "Hockey Mom"
She said it before her speech, and it went right in to the text of her speech:
McCain aides whose judgment I trust are impressed by Sarah Palin. One was particularly amused by this exchange: A nervous young McCain staffer took it upon himself to explain to Palin the facts of life in a national campaign, the intense scrutiny she'd be under from the media, the viciousness of the assault that she'd be facing, etc.:
Palin: "Thanks for the warning. By the way, do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?"
McCain aide: "No, Governor."
Palin: "A hockey mom wears lipstick."
Gov. Sarah Palin and I have something in common: you see, I have been called a "pit bull" many times in my career, the past 15 years, oh, my God. Why? I was opinionated -- still am--and tenacious in my career in consulting, with a steel will and tenacity for the needs of my federal clients. And I have had some mighty difficult clients: attorneys who do not want to pay a high enough retainer for me, and dangerous ones: attorneys who curry favor with lobbyists in DC and then go right into jail. (Tom Delay, Neil Volz, Duane Gibson, Terry Martin, Tony Rudy, George W. Bush, Bob Ney, Jack Abramoff --who led the hearings? John McCain!)
Gov. Sarah and I both have blue collar guys, we have long-term marriages to. My guy loves his motorcycles. He is Mr. Blue Collar, who does my books. I love my boy fiercely. Damn. She is me. damn ----OMG, I must be a REPUBLICAN! A rock - ribbed, steak loving, vodka--swilling pearl-wearing republican! I am a Jew Broad from the Northside of Chicago! Who woulda thunk this!
Sarah Palin is making an impression to many women -and surprisingly (to me), to men!. She is a comely pit bull, and that's how the dogs truly are. They are sweet animals, but when they get a hold of your leg, the simply do not let go------they just hold on........and on......and .......don't/won't let go of that leg!
My shade is plum, or deep claret. And I favor Max Factor.
"Sarah Palin can dress a Moose -- and that is a hell of a lot more than most people have ever done!"
I decided to blog on CNN's iReport. I reckon that makes me an iReporter (yuk yuk)! I signed it Abbe Buck, PR: Housewife, Mother, Publicist. And I am a consultant.
The 'moose' reference was for Fred Thompson's speech the night before.
