Ambush your Senator today! Sic 'em! They work for the you, the public citizen, damnit!

Washington Traffic Jam? Senators-Only Elevator
By MARK LEIBOVICH

WASHINGTON, July 30 — In addition to lofty issues of war and peace, the Senate is grappling with another urgent matter: the senators-only elevators at the Capitol are being overrun by the unelected.

“I hesitate to say that it’s a big problem,” said Senator Frank R. Lautenberg of New Jersey, shaking his head gravely. “There is terrific crowding.”

Mr. Lautenberg, a Democrat who has served more than two decades in the Senate, said he had never seen the Capitol so packed with unelected interlopers.

The crowding extends to the elevators, one of the few sanctuaries available to beleaguered lawmakers as they try to navigate between the Senate chamber, various hearing rooms and offices in the Capitol.

“Sometimes you have to shove your way through, push people,” Mr. Lautenberg said.
Add the elevator problem to the litany of senatorial hardships, somewhere between flying coach and the high costs of barbering.

At times, senators even find themselves on public elevators, an ordeal fraught with the possibility of having to push their own buttons (the senators-only elevators usually have attendants).

Worse, senators sometimes share their moving sanctums with staff members, lobbyists and T-shirt-clad tourists who apparently missed (or ignored or cannot read) the senators-only signs.

Or, double-worse, with reporters.

“No, no, no, c’mon, c’mon,” Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania complained recently as about 10 reporters trailed his colleague Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York onto a senators-only elevator.

Standing outside the elevator, Mr. Santorum complained that “some of the rest of us” need to get on board, too. (He eventually squeezed in.)

The essential idea behind the elevators is to allow senators to travel easily to the Senate floor for votes. They are designed, in Mr. Lautenberg’s words, “to expedite process,” although some senators are not so certain. Senator John W. Warner, Republican of Virginia, called the elevators “a tradition that has long since outlived its usefulness.”

Even so, tradition is a potent conceit on Capitol Hill, especially in the upper crust corridors of the upper chamber.

Members of the House have their own elevators, too, but senators are fewer in number, are more recognizable and tend toward a tall aristocratic archetype. House members blend more seamlessly with the masses and are harder to recognize, which creates its own problems. (Congressional staff members related an incident in 2001, in which they recalled the freshman Representative Melissa Hart of Pennsylvania, who is white, admonishing Representative Julia Carson, who is black, that the elevator they were riding on was members-only. Ms. Carson, of Indiana, proceeded to introduce herself to her new colleague, offense taken.)

“There’s all kinds of lore associated with the Senate elevators,” said Charlie Cook, a Senate elevator operator during his college days at Georgetown and now the editor and publisher of the Cook Political Report, an independent newsletter.

Mr. Cook mentioned one episode, which he attributed to “accepted lore” but did not witness: Senator John Tower, Republican of Texas, was said to throw a volcanic tantrum when an elevator operator did not recognize him and failed to heed his request to take him directly to the basement.

“Hold onto your hat, cowboy,” the attendant is reputed to have told Mr. Tower, who was wearing cowboy boots. “I’ve got a senator I’ve got to pick up.”

Senators-only elevators offer tidy distillations of humanity. “You see all the extremes of behavior,” said John B. Breaux, the former Louisiana senator.

Several senators and staff members recalled the penchant of Paul Wellstone, the late Minnesota senator, for recruiting nonsenators to ride the elevator with him.

Mr. Cook remembered Senator Hubert H. Humphrey coming aboard an elevator, saying hello and asking where Mr. Cook was from.

“Shreveport, Louisiana,” Mr. Cook replied, and Mr. Humphrey proceeded to unburden himself of everything he knew about Shreveport — what Congressional district the city was in, who represented it in Congress and the restaurant where he ate during a visit there.

“He basically kept talking through the ride, as he walked off the elevator, down the hall and around the corner,” Mr. Cook marveled.

Older, tradition-bound Senate veterans — like Ted Stevens of Alaska and Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia — have gained a reputation for hostile glares (or grumbles) when confronted by elevator interlopers.

But anyone who concludes that senators are pampered beings of privilege may rest assured that the elevators are sometimes a source of angst.

“There are times when I press the senators-only button and there are people waiting for the elevators, and I do feel a little guilty.” Mr. Lautenberg admitted.

“Sometimes I invite them in,” he said, “and sometimes I hope they don’t recognize me.”

The basic rule is this: nonsenators are allowed to ride only if asked by a senator. Such invitations typically occur when a reporter is in mid-interview with a senator walking off the Senate floor.

Lobbyists have been known to park themselves outside elevators with attractive young women, the better to win invitations. To be sure, such tactics took place only in earlier eras, when senators held a less enlightened view of women.

(In 1994, Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was said to have engaged in excessive touching of his then-freshman colleague Patty Murray of Washington. Ms. Murray later asked for and received an apology from Mr. Thurmond, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported at the time. Through a spokeswoman, Ms. Murray declined to comment.)

Mr. Breaux concluded the matter with a nod to the public good: “I think the elevators are designed to keep members of the public from having to ride with senators,” he said.

HOORAY for Hollywood! The Mel Gibson Distraction continues...

Be shocked! Be amazed! See Hollywood on a website near you - LA Notebook by Chris Ayres

YOU’VE GOT TO hand it to Hollywood: it’s certainly coming up with the goods these days. Never before have I seen such plots, such drama . . . such comedy. I’ve barely been able to take my eyes off the screen.

Obviously, I don’t mean the movies. I’m talking about real Hollywood life (if there is such a thing) — and its reluctant cast, which has recently included movie stars, studio chiefs, PRs and Malibu sheriff’s deputies. All of which poses the question: after years of news management and celebrity protection, is Tinseltown returning to the days of James Ellroy and LA Confidential; a time when the scandals were more interesting than the screenplays?

Take this unpleasant business with Mel Gibson. The actor-director’s recent movies have left me cold. Subtitles and Jesus? Er, no thanks. How about the rise and fall of the Mayan empire (also with subtitles)? Frankly, I’d rather stab myself in the head with a fork. But give me a tale about a boozed-up Hollywood actor-director (and a strict Catholic, no less) who gets pulled over by the fuzz allegedly with a bottle of tequila on the back seat the proceeds to question the arresting officer’s sexual relations with his mother, claim ownership of Malibu and blames all of the world’s problems on the Jews — now that’s what I call entertainment. Get me a jumbo popcorn, I’m staying ’til the credits.

There’s even a subplot: the above details were contained in a police report that the sheriff’s department initially chose not to publish, claiming instead that Gibson’s arrest at 2.30am last Friday for suspected drunk driving had been entirely “without incident”.

Now that we’ve read the unedited report on the internet, it’s hard to imagine exactly how they define the word “incident” in the Malibu police handbook. If Kim Jong Il dropped a nuke on the Pacific Coast Highway, perhaps it would be written up as a “small disturbance”.

As for Gibson’s apology (made shortly before checking into rehab) : you’ve got to hand it to the man for even trying. I mean, where does one begin? The reported Jew hating? The running from the scene of the crime? The intimidation of a police officer?

Gibson is not the only actor doing his most captivating work outside the cinema. The actress Lindsay Lohan comes to mind. Last week she rushed herself to hospital with “overheating and exhaustion” — a result, her publicist said, of filming Georgia Rule in 105-degree weather for 12 hours. Everyone bought the explanation, until someone leaked a memo sent to Lohan by her boss, the head of Morgan Creek Productions.

Said the missive: “You and your representatives have told us that your various late arrivals and absences from the set have been the result of illness . . . (but) we are well aware that your all-night heavy partying is the real reason.”

Fortunately, Lohan is a mature adult, so she responded to the memo by, er, dragging her mum into it. “Maybe he (Lohan’s boss) has personal issues,” sniffled Dina Lohan, “and it came out with my child.”

Maybe those issues included waiting around in 105-degree heat while one of his grossly overpaid starlets checked herself into hospital for an urgent vitamin B12 shot.
In truth, these public embarrassments are the result of a fundamental shift in power. Until recently entertainment reporting was in the hands of respectful, publicist-friendly titles such as Vanity Fair and The Los Angeles Times. Indeed, the latter recently opened one of its celebrity articles with this gem of a sentence: “One doesn’t so much interview Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne as sit back and watch as their friendship, wordplay and enthusiasm for their craft plays itself out.”

The internet has changed all that. Today the real stories are more likely to appear on the websites of The Smoking Gun, the Drudge Report or the TMZ (which got the Gibson scoop). These websites deal in tips, not interviews. They owe no favours to publicists. And they have more in common with (and more respect for) the British red-top press than The New York Times.

But is it good for the movies? My only evidence is this: I nearly went to see Miami Vice this weekend, but saved the $10 and stayed at home to read Mel Gibson’s arrest report. I can’t imagine I missed much.

O' Rabbi, Where Out Thou? -- Wait! it sounds SINCERE!

Thank you, Uber-PR guy Allan Nierob! Let's give MEL another chance. Save his career NOW. After all, my dad hates everyone but the jews. And this is precisely WHY.

MEL SAYS SORRY TO THE JEWS
Tue Aug 01 2006 11:10:45 ETAugust 2, 2006 --
There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of Anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge. I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out, or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words. The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God’s child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith. I’m not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed. This is not about a film. Nor is it about artistic license. This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have. It’s about existing in harmony in a world that seems to have gone mad.

Condoleeeeeeza Al Dente! To play again (yes!) somewhere in Asia, sometime soon @ ASEAN, Kuala Lumpur

Perhaps it will relieve some stress - and how! Good for you, Madame Secretary!

Rice to play piano at Asian gala
AFP Wednesday, July 26, 2006 22:14 IST

KUALA LUMPUR: The best-kept secret in global diplomacy is out — US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will perform a piano recital at the annual gala of Asia’s top security meeting, diplomats and reports said. The ASEAN Regional Forum this year has a heavy agenda with conflict raging in the Middle East, a missile crisis on the Korean peninsula, and fury over Myanmar’s refusal to embrace democratic reforms. But foreign ministers from the 26-nation grouping will have some light relief at the traditional gala dinner during which the world's top diplomats put aside protocol and perform hilarious skits and musical routines.US secretaries have been particularly keen to poke fun at themselves, with Colin Powell belting out “YMCA” two years ago and Madeleine Albright donning bowler hat and tuxedo in a show-biz turn that brought the house down in 2000. Rice however — a trained pianist with a famously serious demeanour — is expected to perform a work from one of her favourite composers, who include Brahms and Shostakovich, the New Straits Times said.Diplomats based in Kuala Lumpur said they were all expecting a Rice recital, but that the delegations were anxious to keep their acts under wraps after months of planning and rehearsals.“I’m sworn to secrecy on this one,” one diplomat said. “We’re all keeping each other in suspense about this. It’s all under wraps for everyone, people don’t like to reveal their performance and it’s all a sensitive issue.”

Where is our Franklin D.? ~ according to Newt Gingrich "IT IS WW III"

We will need to be a PATRIOTS again now -- and bi-partisan as hell. Newt may be RIGHT and not just a conservative. Ever the historian, and astute on the body politic, the man has never been blind. Stubborn, yes. Stupid? As a horse's ass at times, for the betterment of his party. But blind? No way.

David Postman blogs below: You just listen (read on....)

David Postman has covered politics and government for The Seattle Times since 1994. He's a frequent guest on radio and television, and previously covered politics for The News Tribune in Tacoma, the Anchorage Daily News and Alaska Public Radio Network. He also writes a column every Friday.

Gingrich says it's World War III
Posted by David Postman at 12:54 PM

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president.

"We need to have the militancy that says 'We're not going to lose a city,' " Gingrich said. He talks about the need to recognize World War III as important for military strategy and political strategy.

Gingrich said he is "very worried" about Republican's facing fall elections and says the party must have the "nerve" to nationalize the elections and make the 2006 campaigns about a liberal Democratic agenda rather than about President Bush's record.

Gingrich says that as of now Republicans "are sailing into the wind" in congressional campaigns. He said that's in part because of the Iraq war, adding, "Iraq is hard and painful and we do not explain it very well."

But some of it is due to Republicans' congressional agenda. He said House and Senate Republicans "forgot the core principle" of the party and embraced Congressional pork. "Some of the guys," he said, have come down with a case of "incumbentitis."

Gingrich said in the coming days he plans to speak out publicly, and to the Administration, about the need to recognize that America is in World War III.

He lists wars in:

Afghanistan
Iraq
This week's bomb attacks in India,
North Korean nuclear threats,
Terrorist arrests and investigations in Florida, Canada and Britain;
Violence in Israel and Lebanon

as evidence of World War III.

He said Bush needs to deliver a speech to Congress and "connect all the dots" for Americans.

He said the reluctance to put those pieces together and see one global conflict is hurting America's interests. He said people, including some in the Bush Administration, who urge a restrained response from Israel are wrong "because they haven't crossed the bridge of realizing this is a war."

"This is World War III," Gingrich said. And once that's accepted, he said calls for restraint would fall away:

"Israel wouldn't leave southern Lebanon as long as there was a single missile there. I would go in and clean them all out and I would announce that any Iranian airplane trying to bring missiles to re-supply them would be shot down. This idea that we have this one-sided war where the other team gets to plan how to kill us and we get to talk, is nuts."

There is a public relations value, too. Gingrich said that public opinion can change "the minute you use the language" of World War III. The message then, he said, is "'OK, if we're in the third world war, which side do you think should win?"

An historian, Gingrich said he has been studying recently how Abraham Lincoln talked to Americans about the Civil War, and what turned out to be a much longer and deadlier war than Lincoln expected.

Gingrich is here for fund raisers for Congressman Dave Reichert, 2nd District GOP challenger Doug Roulstone, and the state party. I talked to him in a hotel suite with a few of his and Reichert's staff.

Any time his name comes up here it's said that he once called Washington state "ground zero for the Republican revolution." Republicans saw huge gains in Washington in the 1994 mid-term elections, though they have largely decayed away.

"I think there is a reform oriented populism that is a key a component of Washington State's, if you will, culture or personality," he said. Voters here also got caught up in the national, anti-incumbent, anti-Democratic wave. The other thing that was different here, he said, was "that there was no place in America where talk radio was more enthusiastically favorable to the idea that it was time to try something new."

(Speaking of talk radio, waiting to go in to see Gingrich as I was leaving were KVI's John Carlson and Kirby Wilbur and William Maurer, an attorney with the Institute for Justice who has been backing the talk show hosts in the legal challenge against their on-air championing of an anti-tax initiative.)

With Republicans in control of Washington, D.C., it's Democrats who this year are hoping for a reform wave to sweep them into office. Democrats want to nationalize the election and make each congressional race about Bush, the Iraq war and the Republican agenda. Republicans have been trying to localize each race, as in Reichert's challenge from political newcomer Darcy Burner, and make the race about the qualifications and personalities of the candidates, not about a national agenda.

Gingrich says that's a mistake. Republicans, he says, should nationalize the contest, too. He said that yesterday he saw polling that gave him some optimism for the first time about this year's elections. He didn't say what state it was from, but it showed that Democratic incumbents' poll numbers crashed when tagged with the record of House Democrats.

He said that as Democrats make the elections about George Bush, Republicans should make it about House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco. He said voters need to be told "how weirdly San Francisco these guys are voting" and Democrats will "collapse in defeat."

"The line I think every Republican should use is, 'X knows their record, they just hope you don't,' which is actually the line I used in my winning race in '78. I'm a historian. I don't do anything new. I just imitate. I guarantee you there are 60 or 70 Democrats, if their districts thoroughly understood their record, they'd lose this year even though people aren't happy with Bush. Because people aren't suicidal. ..."

"While people understand that while they may be irritated with Republicans, we at least broadly share their values and visions and the left is just out of touch with reality. I think then you have a totally different debate by October, if we have the nerve to do it. ... There's going to be a national conversation in October. The only question is whether it's the Republicans defining it or whether we have some nutty idea that we can run local races, and so the entire definition is on the left."

UPDATE: I tried to get a comment today from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee but no one ever got back to me. This evening, Kelly Steele, spokesman for the state party, did respond and sent this e-mail:

This is classic - that Gingrich's solution to Bush's failed leadership is a different "marketing strategy" shows the true extent to which Republicans cannot be trusted to win the war on terror. Democrats believe we need a "tough and smart" strategy that makes 2006 a year of transition in Iraq and aggressively takes the fight to the terrorists, while Gingrich and Bush seek to elect a new crop of loyal rubberstamps - McGavick, Reichert, and Roulstone included - to blindly support and extend their monopoly on their "tough and dumb" conduct of the war in Iraq and the larger battle against global terrorism.

Ann Coulter wins columnist 'award' last given to writerwho made up 43 people - Syndicate to probe plagiarism

Coulter wins Sitting Duck award; Last awarded to columnist who made up 43 people - RAW STORY - Published: Wednesday July 5, 2006

Conservative firebrand Ann Coulter was awarded the 'Sitting Duck Award' by the National Society of Newspaper columnists, who met in Boston this past weekend, Editor and Publisher reports.

The award, typically doled out in an ironic fashion, came with a statement from the society that Coulter received the prize "for cheapening political discourse in America."

"We award the Lame Duck reluctantly, because we know Ms. Coulter is desperate for any kind of attention," the society added.

According to a celebrity newsgroup, "Ann Coulter was mentioned and criticized several times by speakers at the National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) conference here. Then she received the NSNC's ultimate mention and criticism -- winning the annual Sitting Duck Award for easiest column target."

The award last year went to Detroit columnist Mitch Albom and Sacramento Bee columnist Diane Erwin. Erwin was fired and later excoriated by her paper for fabricating 30 people in 27 columns. Investigators, randomly sampling pieces from Erwin's ten-year career, could not account for 13 people in an additional ten columns.

Editor and Publisher: "The humorous award is given annually to a celebrity who makes obvious fodder for columnists with writer’s block — Michael Jackson and Saddam Hussein were among the nominees — but the society found that the best column fodder came from its own ranks."

These columnists made it easier for other columnists to write something on a slow news day, the society's Vice President told E&P.

“We didn’t have to make something up, because they already did it for us,” NSNC vice president and York (Pa.) Daily Record columnist said.

And now, (we will "stage") the news

AP: TV Cameraman Fined

Jul 05 2:02 PM US/Eastern

NORWALK, Ohio- A television news cameraman paid a $145 fine after police said he enticed three teenagers to ride their bikes through waist-high floodwaters.

The boys told police that Gary Abrahamsen of WEWS-TV in Cleveland offered to put them on TV if they rode through the water on a bridge, according to a police report. They said a reporter waded into the water so they would be riding behind her in the video.

Police cited Abrahamsen with misdemeanor disorderly conduct June 22. He paid the fine June 28, according to Norwalk Municipal Court.

Abrahamsen denied coaxing the two 13-year-olds and one 14-year-old to ride through the water, and told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer that paying the fine was cheaper than fighting the citation. A message seeking further comment Wednesday was not immediately returned.

Judy Shaw, an assistant to WEWS Vice President and General Manager John Butte, said the station had no comment.

Norwalk, about halfway between Toledo and Cleveland in Huron County, was hit hard by damaging storms that began June 21 and were blamed for flash flooding and two deaths. The flood water in the Norwalk nearly covered cars in some low-lying areas.

Jul 03 6:34 PM US/Eastern

Star Hollywood actor-activists including Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon and anti-war campaigners led by bereaved mother Cindy Sheehan plan to launch a hunger strike, demanding the immediate return of US troops from Iraq.

As Americans get set to fire up barbeques in patriotic celebration of US Independence Day on July 4, anti-war protestors planned to savour a last meal outside the White House, before embarking on a 'Troops Home Fast' at midnight.

"We've marched, held vigils, lobbied Congress, camped out at Bush's ranch, we've even gone to jail, now it's time to do more," said Sheehan, who emerged as an anti-war icon after losing her 24-year-old son Casey in Iraq.

The hunger strike was the latest bid by the US anti-war movement to grab hold of American public opinion, after numerous marches, vigils and political campaigns.

Despite polls which show the Iraq war is unpopular and many Americans are skeptical of President George W. Bush's wartime leadership, peace protests have not hit the opinion-swaying critical mass seen during Vietnam War.

"We have been continually sheltered from the actual cost of war from the beginning," said Meredith Dearborn, of human rights group Global Exchange, explaining how anti-Iraq war protests have stuttered.

While 2,526 US soldiers have died since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to an AFP tally based on Pentagon figures, the impact of the deaths has rarely dominated headlines.

While it is not unusual to see an Iraq-war veteran or amputee in an airport for instance, or newspaper features on horrific injuries inflicted by roadside bombs in Iraq, the United States hardly feels like a nation at war.

Some protestors and experts in public opinion put that down to the absence of the Vietnam War style conscription draft, which means only professional soldiers or reservists can be sent off to war.

"We have done everything we could think of to end this war, we have protested, held marches, vigils ... lobbied, written letters to Congress," said Dearborn.

"Now it is time to bring the pain and suffering of war home. We are putting our bodies on the line for peace."

Perhaps the only time the anti-Iraq war movement captured lasting coverage was in August 2005, when Sheehan and supporters pitched camp outside Bush's Texas ranch, where the president habitually stays in high summer.

Even then, the fiercely partisan debate unleashed may have harmed Sheehan, who faced fierce fire from conservative groups and radio talk show hosts, as much as it hurt the Bush administration's image over Iraq.

The hunger strike will see at least four activists, Sheehan, veteran comedian and peace campaigner Dick Gregory, former army colonel Ann Wright and environmental campaigner Diane Wilson launch serious, long-term fasts.

"I don't know how long I can fast, but I am making this open-ended," said Wilson.

Other supporters, including Penn, Sarandon, novelist Alice Walker and actor Danny Glover will join a 'rolling" fast, a relay in which 2,700 activists pledge to refuse food for at least 24 hours, and then hand over to a comrade.

Though the anti-war movement is trying hard to puncture public perceptions, some experts believe such protests have little impact on how Americans view foreign wars.

Ohio State University professor John Mueller for example, argued in the Foreign Affairs journal in December, that only rising US casualties could be proven to erode public support for a conflict.

Anti-war movements during the Korean and Iraq wars have been comparitively invisible, but public support had eroded in a similar way to the Vietnam conflict, in which the peace movement played a dominant role, he wrote.

Recent polls reveal public scepticism over Iraq, and damage to Bush's personal ratings.

In a poll in Time magazine published Friday, only 33 percent of respondents approved of Bush's leadership on Iraq while 64 percent said they disapproved his handling of the campaign.

A Pew Research Center poll released on June 20, found that only 35 percent of Americans approved of Bush's handling of the Iraqi conflict -- though that was up five percent from a similar poll in February.

If any of you were around to see his performance on the Iran/Contra investigation you would have the same reaction. He acted as an enabler and apologist for the criminals; Ollie North, Caspar Weinberger and John Poindexter. All were guilty of acts that could only be called treasonous (supplying America's enemies with high-tech weapons, funding an undeclared war against a popular elected government.) All were either cleared on legal technicalities or pardoned by the next president, George H. W. Bush. Poindexter went on to head the TIA (Total Information Awareness) program that morphed into the NSA's warrantless wiretapping program. Nothing has changed. the great bloviator weighs with a message to miss ann coulter which means MORE PR = MORE $$$$$

O’Reilly claims Coulter likes the attention she’s getting and is an extremist. SO, WHAT ELSE IS NEW? SHE'S #1.

A MESSAGE TO ANN: Ann Coulter should listen to me. But she doesn't listen to anyone, so that's not going to happen. In the past, I've told Ms. Coulter that using personal attacks to make ideological points is short-term gain but long-term pain. You can make money doing that, but respect in the mass market will elude you.

There is hypocrisy running wild in the Coulter controversy. The same media voices that embrace the smear tactics routinely used by the far-left Air America radio network and displayed daily on the nutty political blogs are all huffy about Ms. Coulter attacking a group of 9/11 widows called the "Jersey Girls." I mean, give me a break, the vicious Al Franken-Michael Moore crowd is now appalled by Coulter? That's like Hulk Hogan being offended by Barry Bonds. However, bad behavior does not justify other bad behavior, and if conservatives support the personal attacks that Ann Coulter trades in, then they must accept them from the "Bush lied" crew.

But back to Ann. Having spoken with her a number of times, I can tell you a few things. She likes the attention. She is a true believer—that is, her disdain for the left is not an act. She is rigid in her scorched-earth approach, believing that just about any tactic is legitimate when it comes to marginalizing liberals. In other words, she is Howard-Dean-extreme and just as wild as he is. But like Governor Dean, Ms. Coulter can only sing to her soulmates. Most Americans are not ideological, and they respond to logic, not politically driven emotion. Whether you agree with the liberal politics of the Jersey Girls or not, few people want to see these women harmed in any way. Thus, many unaligned people will now never be persuaded by Ann Coulter about anything because they think she's mean.

Ms. Coulter's primary point about the left using people like the Jersey Girls to attack conservatives is valid. That was on display in my dust-up with David Letterman. Last January on his program, I said Cindy Sheehan was wrong to call insurgents in Iraq "freedom fighters." Mr. Letterman contended I had no right to criticize Ms. Sheehan about anything because she had a son killed on the battlefield. Coulter picked up on that and other examples of left-wing exploitation of tragedy. But, interestingly, the right does it as well. How many times have we seen President Bush in photo-ops with supporters who have lost loved ones in the war on terror?

In the current media jungle, vicious attacks can bring down prey. Both the left and the right use them. But I truly believe that, ultimately, the winners in the war of ideas will be those who out-reason their opponents, not out-smear them. Again, Americans have always admired fairness along with perseverance and honesty. There are plenty of ways to criticize the Jersey Girls without bringing their dead husbands into it.

But Ann Coulter is not going to listen to me, and neither will others who delight in using personal attacks against those with whom they disagree. They won't listen because they are being celebrated by their chorus and are being well paid by corporations who are more than happy to light their flaming arrows.

Welcome to the ideological jungle. It is not a nice place.

HVPR opines: "If Jews can't get into heaven, it's because Pat Robertson has been doing the 4-1-1 with Constantine, according to his publicist"

Yes, sir. Pat is now talking with the DEAD. And Michael Eisner, proud man of the Hebrew nation, does not like him messing with OUR HIGHER AUTHORITY GOTDAMMITT!

Constantine changed the rules in 317 A.D.. And Pat Robertson is just a silly old man.

June 18, 2006 -- NY POST - TELEVISION preacher Pat Robertson was a little irked after being challenged by Michael Eisner, the former Disney boss-turned-talk show host, on several topics, including whether or not Jewish people go to heaven.

Robertson, who most recently made headlines by claiming to have leg-pressed 2,000 pounds, (see: SPiN's recent column), had his p.r. handler Christopher A. Roslan e-mail CNBC executives last week following a taping for "Conversations With Michael Eisner," according to network sources.

The e-mail, a copy of which was obtained by On The Money, complained: "The interview was not at all what we expected. Mr. Eisner covered the business end of things as promised, but then challenged Dr. Robertson on some extremely controversial political issues including gay rights, Hugo Chavez and whether or not Jewish people go to heaven.

"We were all very disappointed that Mr. Eisner chose to go in this direction." (TSK TSK TSK!)

Eisner and Robertson have clashed in the past, most notably when Robertson attacked Disney for offering health benefits for the partners of gay employees and allowing a "Gay Days" weekend at Disney World.

In addition, Robertson founded The Family Channel, which was first sold to News Corp. and then Disney.

Last year Robertson called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Chavez on his long- running TV show "The 700 Club."

Eisner's interview with Robertson is part of the fourth episode of his talk show, and will air Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. Eisner also interviews Whoopi Goldberg on the show.
Previous interviews have included Martha Stewart, Billy Crystal and Sony chief Howard Stringer.

This is a fine romance. Olbermann and Cosby/msnbc

Keith Olbermann and Rita Cosby. What a pair! I understand from my UNreliable sources that he wants to ask her out. He likes blondes - but do they like him?

We'll see.

Courtesy of Lloyd Grove mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-smack! (look it up! Look it up!)

It's 'Putdown With Keith Olbermann'

Dueling hosts Keith Olbermann and Rita Cosby (below) could hand the network’s new chief, Dan Abrams, his first battle.

-->>>>>>>>>>>>

Now that Dan Abrams has given up his MSNBC show to run the third-place cable news outlet, he might want to focus on the rising tensions between two of his prime-time personalities: Keith Olbermann and Rita Cosby.

Olbermann, whose "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" airs weeknights at 8, apparently has precious little respect for Cosby, whose "Rita Cosby: Live & Direct" airs at 10 p.m.

"Rita's nice," Olbermann wrote to a fan from his MSNBC E-mail account, "but dumber than a suitcase of rocks." Yesterday Cosby retorted: "Keith got it wrong. I'm not that nice."
But a Cosby intimate gasped when informed of Olbermann's E-mail. "That's incredibly disappointing," he said.

An MSNBC spokesman didn't dispute the authenticity of the months-old E-mail, which came to light this week after the recipient shared it with this column on condition of anonymity.

In his E-mail, Olbermann was also dismissive of then-MSNBC President Rick Kaplan, who left the network last week with six months to go on his three-year contract.

"And Kaplan?" Olbermann wrote to his fan. "He was the producer of that special last night — now known as the Kanye West Show." It was a reference to an embarrassing incident during NBC's Hurricane Katrina telethon on which the popular rapper departed from his script to claim President Bush "doesn't care about black people."

Olbermann, who didn't comment yesterday, was said to be on vacation — though he managed to turn up Monday night at a book party for Al Gore at the American Museum of Natural History.
There, the media blog Jossip.com asked Olbermann — who was accompanied by "his self-described 'friend' Katie" — if he'll now be answering to Abrams.

"I don't answer to anybody," Olbermann insisted.

We'll see.

AP - Music Video About Marine Sparks Anger
Jun 13 1:58 PM US/Eastern - Email this story

By LOLITA C. BALDOR- Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTONA music video posted to the Internet, telling a tale about a U.S. Marine killing members of an Iraqi family, is being condemned by an Islamic group and investigated by the Marine Corps.

The four-minute video, called "Hadji Girl," appears to be sung by a Marine in front of a cheering audience. The lyrics talk about the Marine gunning down members of an Iraqi woman's family after they confront him with automatic weapons.

Lt. Col. Scott Fazekas, a spokesman for the Marines, said Tuesday that the Marines were aware of a video posted on the Internet that "purports to show a Marine singing an insensitive song about Iraqis." Fazekas said officials don't know the identity of the singer or whether he is in the military.

The song was "inappropriate and contrary to the high standards expected of all Marines," Fazekas said. He said Marine officers are looking into the matter.

Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said that in light of recent allegations of atrocities committed by Marines in Haditha and other towns in Iraq, the video should be investigated by the Pentagon and Congress.

"The inappropriate actions of a few individuals should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of all American military personnel," said Awad.

The video was posted anonymously on the http://www.youtube.com Web site, but was removed. It is still available on CAIR's web site. A Hadji is a pilgrim who journeys to Mecca, but CAIR said the word has often been used as a disparaging term by U.S. troops in Iraq.

"The video is not reflective of the tremendous sacrifices and dedication demonstrated, on a daily basis, by tens of thousands of Marines who have assisted the Iraqi people in gaining their freedom," Fazekas said. "We agree with the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations that the inappropriate actions of a few individuals should not tarnish the reputation of all American military personnel."

The singer is shown playing a guitar and singing about meeting an Iraqi woman and then being confronted by her brother and father, who have guns. The lyrics describe the Marine pulling the woman's little sister in front of him and watching blood spray from her head.

He then sings about blowing the father and brother "to eternity."

Defense officials are investigating allegations that U.S. Marines massacred as many as two dozen unarmed civilians in Haditha last November. Another probe is under way into charges that U.S. troops pulled an unarmed Iraqi man from his home in Hamandiya in late April and shot him to death without provocation.

Memorandum to Ann Coulter: Be Careful what you wish for, or predict - it can happen to YOU - in spades!

"You want to be careful not to become just a blowhard," --Ann Coulter, The Washington Post, October 16, 1998.

9/11 Commissioner Criticizes Coulter- Jun 09 3:46 PM US/Eastern
By PHILIP ELLIOTT - Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A member of the Sept. 11 commission on Friday lashed out at conservative pundit Ann Coulter for a "hate-filled attack" in saying the widows whose husbands died in the World Trade Center used the deaths for their own political gain.

In her latest book, Coulter criticizes the four New Jersey widows who pushed for an independent commission to investigate the Sept. 11, attacks. The women also backed Democrat John Kerry's presidential candidacy in 2004.

"These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief- arazzis. I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much," Coulter wrote.

Former Rep. Tim Roehmer, D-Ind., a member of the commission that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks, called Coulter's "hate-filled attack on the patriotic heroes of 9/12 _ the widows of 9/11 _ reprehensible and undignified."

Roehmer urged people not to buy her book. "Americans shouldn't contribute to her profiting from these vicious remarks."

Rep. Rahm Emmanuel, D-Ill., said Thursday on the House floor that Coulter is a "hatemonger" and called on Republicans to denounce her: "I must ask my colleagues on the other side of the aisle: Does Ann Coulter speak for you when she suggests poisoning not Supreme Court Justices or slanders the 9/11 ... widows? If not, speak now. Your silence allows her to be your spokesman."

Among Coulter's previous statements, she advocated the invasion of non-Christian nations after Sept. 11 and the deportation from the U.S. of "all aliens from Arabic countries." She said American Taliban John Walker should be executed to show liberals what happens to traitors. And she said the only real question about President Clinton was "whether to impeach or assassinate."

((((( yEAH, THE pORTABLE PORTA-POTTY cOULTER or ))))

Among the most quotable Coulter:

_"To expiate the pain of losing her first-born son in the Iraq war, Cindy Sheehan decided to cheer herself up by engaging in Stalinist agitprop outside President Bush's Crawford ranch. ... After your third profile on 'Entertainment Tonight,' you're no longer a grieving mom; you're a C-list celebrity trolling for a book deal or a reality show," Coulter wrote in her TownHall.com column on Aug. 18, 2005.

_"Even if corners were cut, (Iran-Contra) was a brilliant scheme. There is no possibility that anyone in any Democratic administration would have gone to such lengths to fund anti-communist forces. When Democrats scheme from the White House, it's to cover up the president's affair with an intern. When Republicans scheme, it's to support embattled anti-communist freedom fighters sold out by the Democrats," she wrote in 2003's "Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism."

_"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building," The New York Observer quoted her as saying on Aug. 20, 2002. She clarified those remarks with RightWingNews.com: "Of course I regret it. I should have added, 'after everyone had left the building except the editors and reporters.'"

_"After all other suitable office space in Manhattan had dried up _ and also after spending the weekend golfing at an all-white club in Florida _ Clinton announced he would take an office in Harlem. ... As one of my friends remarked, that should be nice: Having escaped a mugging on the way to work, Clinton's female employees will then have to face an accused rapist in the office," Coulter wrote on Feb. 19, 2001.

_"(Liberals) are always accusing us of repressing their speech. I say let's do it. Let's repress them. ... Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the First Amendment," Coulter said during an Oct. 21, 2005, speech at the University of Florida.

_"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war," Coulter wrote in a column published by the National Review Online on Sept. 13, 2001.

_"The portrayal of Senator Joe McCarthy as a wild-eyed demagogue destroying innocent lives is sheer liberal hobgoblinism. Liberals weren't cowering in fear during the McCarthy era. They were systematically undermining the nation's ability to defend itself while waging a bellicose campaign of lies to blacken McCarthy's name. Everything you think you know about McCarthy is a hegemonic lie. Liberals denounced McCarthy because they were afraid of getting caught, so they fought back like animals to hide their own collaboration with a regime as evil as the Nazis," she wrote in "Treason."

_"Mostly the Witches of East Brunswick wanted George Bush to apologize for not being Bill Clinton," she wrote in "Godless." She was referring to the New Jersey town where two of the Sept. 11 widows live.

_"We need somebody to put rat poison in Justice Stevens' creme brulee," Coulter said in a Jan. 27 appearance at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark., regarding Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. She later explained she was joking about the justice, whose votes have upheld Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision legalizing abortion

"A senior Marine general familiar with the investigation, which is being led by Maj. Gen. Eldon A. Bargewell of the Army, said in an interview that it had not yet established how high up the chain of command culpability for the killings extended. But he said there were strong suspicions that some officers knew that the Marine squad's version of events had enough holes and discrepancies that it should have been looked into more deeply.

"It's impossible to believe they didn't know," the Marine general said, referring to midlevel and senior officers. "You'd have to know this thing stunk." He was granted anonymity, along with others who described the investigation, because he was not authorized to speak publicly about it."

AP's John Solomon's vendetta: GET HARRY REID - The plot thickens!

NEWS FLASH

AMERICA-BLOG is going to make 1,000,0000,0000000000000 strong go to REUTERS

WATCH AND SEE!

Wednesday, May 31, 2006 AP's John Solomon publishes ANOTHER misleading hit piece on Harry Reid by John in DC - 5/31/2006 11:25:00 PM

Okay, this one is truly outrageous coming from anyone working for an "independent" news organization like AP. The Associated Press is a c3 non-profit - in my view, they are entering very interesting legal territory in terms of their non-political non-profit status.AP's Solomon just published a story stating in the first sentence:

Reversing course, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid's office acknowledged Wednesday night he misstated the ethics rules governing his acceptance of free boxing tickets and has decided to avoid taking such gifts in the future.

Any reader who speaks a lick of English is clearly going to understand Solomon's sentence as saying that Harry Reid claimed the Senate ethics rules said it was okay for him to accept the boxing tickets, and now Reid realizes the ethics rules say he cannot accept such tickets. The problem? That's a flat out lie - Reid never said any such thing. Of course, in the way that only AP can do, they bury the "real" explanation of what they mean towards the end of the story so you'll walk away thinking something totally different than the truth.Reid misstated the Senate ethics rules alright. He unintentionally painted the rules as MORE restrictive than they actually are. But you won't find that out until the end of the story.

In a nutshell, the ethics rules say a Senator can take something of value from a state agency (in this case, Reid accepted access to 3 boxing matches from a state of Nevada government agency - there weren't any "tickets"). Reid misspoke in saying that you had to be the Senator from the state in question to accept the "something of value." I.e., McCain of Arizona couldn't accept something from the state of Nevada, or so Reid thought. In fact, Reid today informs us that ANY Senator can accept something of value from ANY state's agency - i.e., it's okay for Arizona's John McCain to get boxing access from the state of the Nevada. This isn't a small point. Harry Reid mistakenly claimed that the Senate ethics rules were MORE stringent in this area than they really are. And he wasn't refering to how the rules covered him - which is what AP claims - he was refering to how they covered John McCain. Harry Reid was absolutely correct in how he stated the Senate ethics rules' application to him, and he has not changed his position on that. The AP outright lied, or is one of the sloppiest publications on the planet, in their description of this issue in their lead (which is often the only thing people read). To Reid's credit, he's said tonight that if it's going to create any appearance of impropriety, he'll pay for such boxing access in the future. And good for him. But for AP to paint this as though the Reid was wrong and the Senate ethics rules say he was wrong - and that's exactly what AP implies in its lead - is itself flat out wrong, and unethical, and frankly smacks of politics. And if the AP wants to have a partisan agenda, then they should change their tax status, or maybe someone should do it for them. Here is the statement from Reid's office tonight about the issue:

"Senate ethics rules specifically permit any senator to accept something of value from a state agency. Senator Reid misspoke when he said the rule applies only to senators who represent the state agency. It was therefore entirely permissible for Senator Reid -- a Senator from Nevada -- to have attended a major Nevada sportingevent as a guest of Nevada officials. But in light of questions that have been raised about the practice, Senator Reid will not accept these kinds of credentialsin the future in order to avoid even the faintest appearance of impropriety. Senator Reid will continue to fight for his federal boxing bill and otherlegislation that will benefit Nevada and the nation."
