The DEMs speak out -- protest Lt Gov Steele's exploratory Rovian dinner -- not pretty. Makes the AP wire, too.

Those chucklehead Dems have all of the fun!

AP: Steele fundraiser featuring Rove draws Democrat fire

By STEPHEN MANNING Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON: White House strategist Karl Rove helped Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele raise $75,000 Tuesday night at a Capitol Hill event picketed by demonstrators angry over Rove's possible role in releasing a covert CIA officer's identity to the press.

About 65 people showed up at the event at the headquarters of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. The fundraiser was closed to the media.Ticket prices were set at $1,000 for an individual and $2,000 for a political action committee. A copy of the invitation, obtained by the Maryland Democratic Party, listed the lead hostess as Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., along with several prominent national Republican fundraisers.

Steele and Rove both entered through a side entrance, bypassing about 40 protesters from the liberal group Progressive Maryland, who stood chanting in the oppressive heat.

Tom Hucker, executive director of Progressive Maryland, said Steele should not be linking himself with Rove because of Rove's possible legal and ethical problems.

"No one who would choose Karl Rove as a friend is fit to serve in the U.S. Senate," Hucker said.Dan Ronayne, spokesman for the NRSC, said the demonstration is a sign Democrats are worried about Steele's possible candidacy. "This is partisan politics. They're clearly concerned about Michael Steele as a candidate for U.S. Senate.

"Federal prosecutors are trying to determine who illegally revealed the name of Valerie Plame to reporters in 2003. Plame's husband has alleged her name was leaked because he had criticized the White House's evidence on Iraq's effort to obtain nuclear weapons material.

Time Magazine reporter Matthew Cooper later said Rove gave him Plame's name, which Cooper used in a story. Rove has said he was only passing on information he had obtained from other reporters, not a government source.

At an event earlier in the day at Bowie State University, Steele brushed off the criticism."They are criticizing for political purposes," he said of plans to hold the event. "There is no legal or ethical reason for me to do otherwise at this point. I look forward to him hosting a fundraiser for me." [MORE]
